What is the Raindrop Technique?
An Introduction to a Beautiful and Healing Essential Oil Therapy
(orig written 2005, edited 10/'18)
Raindrop Technique (RT) is an application of Therapeutic-Grade essential oils lightly massaged into the muscles along your spine using a very specific sequence and technique. Oils are also applied to the spinal reflex points along the arch of each foot using "Vitaflex", a Tibetan form of reflexology rediscovered by Stanley Burroughs in the 1960’s. Another fragrant oil blend is applied to your feet and shoulders during a process called ‘energy balancing’ that begins the session. Even though the oils are applied ‘neat’ (undiluted), few people get any discomfort because of the high quality and extreme purity of the oils.
The Oils and Their Properties
The 7 essential oils used in (basic) RT in the order of their application are:
Oregano- potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Thyme- highly antimicrobial, inhibiting growth of infectious micro-organisms
Basil- antispasmodic to relax muscles, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial
Cypress- improves circulation, relieves spasms & swelling and heals damaged tissue
Wintergreen- anti-inflammatory & analgesic due to the high methyl salicylate content
Marjoram- is antispasmodic and muscle-relaxing
Peppermint- enhances the effects of all preceding oils
More About the Oils
Essential oils are liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots and seeds of various plants found in nature. Different plants produce aromatic volatile liquids with different properties. For instance, Juniper will yield different oils than jasmine, and juniper grown in one part of the world will yield different properties than juniper grown in another part.
The "Essential Oils Desk Reference" 4th ed. copyright Sept 2007 by Essential Science Publishing says, "Therapeutic Grade essential oils are the most cellular oxygenating, immune stimulating and energy balancing (at the high frequency) natural substances on earth. Because of their purity and unique affinity for the body, they may also be topically, applied and ingested for enhanced general health and disease fighting benefits."
The oils I use include Young Living (YL) Essential Oils (and others). The YL are manufactured by the same company whose founder created the Raindrop Technique. These oils meet or exceed the "AFNOR" and (ISO) standard developed in France, where the most advanced research and medical applications of essential oils occur. It’s noteworthy to mention that (at the time of this writing) less than 3% of all essential oils produced worldwide meet this standard. Indeed, (tho they are actually hard to find) some essential oils found in retail stores in the USA contain synthetic oils which have no therapeutic properties, and do contain the toxic solvents with which they were created. I don’t use those oils.
What to expect
With RT you will begin by laying face-up on the massage table. First we’ll do ‘energy balancing’ with an (equivalent to) essential oil YL blend called Valor. This prepares you physically, emotionally and energetically for the RT session. I also like to begin by prompting you to set uplifted intentions for the session. I feel this enlists your mind to assist with the positive outcomes available with RT. Then the 7 oils will be applied to the spinal reflex points on each of your feet using Vitaflex. Then you’ll turn over so the oils can be dropped onto the spine from a distance of 6 to 8" (thus the name!) and spread over the muscles on each side with various massage strokes. After all 7 oils are applied to the spine, an oil blend which seals in the essential oils for them to do their work over time is applied. This concludes the RT session.
In my practice variations of Raindrop have evolved with each specific client. An interesting note is that RT does such a great job of relaxing and releasing the muscles along the spine that it is common for clients to ‘grow’ taller by 1/4 to 3/4"! Everyone I have done RT for has experienced this. That’s why we’ll measure you before and after each session.

If you have a friend who had RT done for them, you will almost certainly hear positive comments. I too have received RT and truly believe it ‘works’. That’s why I offer it. (In recent years other essential oil companies and skeptics have written quite a bit about how bad RT is. I can tell you I have not had ANY clients expereince unpredicted or bad reactions to this technique. If you want to schedule an RT session we will have a discussion to determine if it's appropriate for you) Your Raindrop Technique session willl last about 50 minutes and is available at my Westerville office for $80.
